Demographic data

The West Side of the San Joaquin Valley has been labeled Appalachia West.  Poverty, poor health and low graduation rates puts the West Side of the San Joaquin Valley dead last in a national score card that ranks the well being of U.S. residents. 

  • Life expectancy: 77.1 yrs
    (compared to 81.6 yrs in Manhattan)
  • College Graduates: 6.5% 
    (compared to 62.6% in New York)
  • High School Graduates: 52.6%
    (compared to 71% for the U.S.)
  • Median household Incomes: $16,767
    (compared to $51,139 in New York)

Despite these inequalities 0.9% of Foundation funds in California come to the San Joaquin Valley compared to 28.8% to Los Angeles and 53.3% to the Bay Area.
